                                                                     A DOCTOR'S NOTE

Periodically we will be hi-lighting an area of interest. One of our providers will provide their insight on health related issues.
Our first "DOCTOR'S NOTE" is from Dr. Victor Elinoff, MD.

"OLD MEDICATIONS, NEW MEDICATIONS, THE FDA AND YOU"
I am commonly asked questions concerning the safety of medication. The saying "newer is better" has been replaced with "I don't trust anything drug companies say now or what they told me in the past." Public trust in the FDA and the Pharmaceutical industry has eroded. This creates a problem for people who are ill or need preventative medicine for medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Here are some issues:
1. The public has more access to information about health care than ever before. The media and internet spread the good and the bad news about medically related developments instantaneously. Often balanced reporting is absent. Issues are over simplified for the sake of brevity or sensationalism.
2. Newly approved medications often offer significant advances. Even though they have been studied for years, unknown side effects are still possible. This can take years as millions of doses have to be taken before these rare adverse events will become apparent. It may unfairly appear that the drug company intentionally covered up or there was incompetence or worse collusion with big Pharma at the FDA.
3. We live in a country that is very litigious. In other words, if something goes wrong then someone has to be responsible and therefore someone will have to pay. Let's face it, medical liabilty and negligence cases can be very costly and lucrative for the legal profession.
4. It seems to me that the public often puts more trust in what they hear or see in the lay media than in the medical profession.

Here are some facts you should consider.
Do you know it takes more than 7 years of extensive testing and up to a billion dollars before a new drug can be approved by the FDA? Many studies are done here in the triple cities by our own Regional Clinical Research Staff. Maybe you or friends or neighbors were in one of those studies. Thousands of human research subjects took the study drug for years to collect statisitcal information. This data was then evaluated and presented to the experts at the FDA. After all this testing no drug is 100% safe or perfect, nor can every problem be anticipated.

Here are some questions to ask your health care provider.
What is the risk of treating vs. the risk of not treating your problem?
What are the benefits of treating the disease?
What are the risks of NOT treating?
What are the potential harms or suffering that can result from neglecting your disease?
What are the possible side effects of the treatment?
What other alternatives exist?
Can lifestyle help the condition?
Do the newer medications or treatments have an advantage over the older ones?

When you read or hear something unfavorable about a drug ask your provider for clarification but don't stop the treatment until you have spoken with your health care provider.

5.If you have a side effect from a treatment or medication call your provider and ask for their advice.  Often a change in dose or dose timing can resolve the problem.  Sometimes suddenly stopping medication can be harmful.

HEALTH CARE involves a partnership with your provider.  Information sharing is a mutual concern.  Here at Endwell Family Physicians we want to be your partner in your health care needs.
Remember the only dumb question is the one that was never asked!

EFP FUNDRAISING!!
In January, EFP held our 3rd annual Basket Raffle Fundraiser. The employees and owners of both EFP and RCR feel very strongly in "giving back" to our community. We started out small scale, with occasional "dress down days". The money raised was used to help out a local charity or a needy family. When the Flood of 2006 devastated our region, several of our own employees were in need of desperate help. That's when we decided to take action.
The staff organized several fundraisers here in the office. We are proud to say that we were able to help out 12 different employee families with all the money raised.  We also made monetary donations and collected needed items for the local organizations that were aiding the flood victims.
After reaching and exceeding this fundraising goal, we were determined to do more. EFP feels very blessed and very fortunate that we can come together as one big family and be able to help other families in our community. We all participate in our "dress down days", which is the first Friday of every month, and our Basket Raffle has now become an annual event!
We have proudly donated to several different charities, families, and organizations. Here is a list of our recipients:
**Numerous Flood Victim Families
**Conklin Flood Relief
**St. Theresa's Cupboard
**CHOW
**Aids Walk
**Operation First Response (aid to our soldiers)
**Asafoaste in Hohoe, Ghana, Africa (Dr. Elinoff's volunteer site)
**Logan's Light
**Danielle House
**SOS Shelter
**Mom's House
**Zooneyfest
**American Cancer Society (Concept::Create::Cure)

EFP will continue to work hard in our efforts to help others. We are all truly thankful our strength, our courage, our wisdom, and our determination to be a continued source of support in our community.
